FINDINGS:
During the 2026 Olefins Unit Turnaround, visual inspection of C-407 (Caustic Scrubber) revealed cracking that exceeded the acceptance criteria per ASME Section VIII Div 1 UW-51 / API 510 section 8. Refer to the information below for specific dimensions of the aforementioned defects.
PT revealed linear indications at the ring-to-shell fillet at 30, 150 and 270 degrees, the longest 2.4 in. No through-wall indication.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- Option 1: Grind to sound metal, re-weld with matching filler, PT to confirm removal.
JUSTIFICATION(S):
Cracked support welds carry the packing bed load. Left as found they propagate under thermal cycling and drop the bed.
